| For an experienced flintknapper of 3 years or more, to make a simple two inch arrowhead would usually take approximately 15-20 minutes depending on the flake shape and the type of lithic material used. Master knappers can knap a simple two inch point or arrowhead in less than 15 minutes. If you are a beginner, it may take you 1 1/2 hours to knap a simple crude looking arrowhead. Don't worry about how long it takes when first starting to knap, but put your focus on removing good clean flakes. Your speed and accuracy will increase in proportion with the amount of time you practice flintknapping As a side note, save those first crude points so that you can look back at them after a bad day of knapping, and be reminded of just how far you've progressed in your knapping skills. I still have some of my first points that I show beginners so that they can see that I too knapped thick and crooked points. |
